Pay attention to standards when wearing reflective clothing

In the dark, reflective vests, jackets and trousers are important for cyclists and pedestrians. This makes them more visible to others. Anyone who is considering a new acquisition should pay attention to standards. Here are the most important numbers.

Reflective materials on clothing or bags make pedestrians and cyclists more visible in the dark. That’s because jackets or bags that are equipped with this technology throw the headlights of cars back directly.

The German Traffic Safety Council (DVR) advises paying attention to appropriate standards when buying reflective clothing. For safety accessories and clothing with the retro-reflective material, the number DIN EN 13356 and on schoolbags with illuminated surfaces should be the number DIN 58124. Alternatively, pedestrians and cyclists could wear safety vests in accordance with the EN ISO 20471 standard.

The Channel calls for the yellow vest

As long as it was within its competence, the Department of the Channel was distributing yellow reflective vests to students using school transport. The Normandy Region did not follow…

The departmental councilor of La Manche delegate for road safety, Dominique Morel, is angry with the regional council of Normandy, which took over the organization of school transport.

In a message communicated Friday, September 30, she does not go in four ways:

“I note, for the start of the 2018-2019 school year, that student safety is not a priority! The regional council has decided to no longer make the yellow vest with reflective materials mandatory in school buses. How can we make such a decision, when they have not yet distributed a single yellow vest since September 1, 2017! ”

“It worked well”

The Manchester election exposes the context that exasperates him all the more:

When we take a skill, we do not wait. It should have been prepared upstream. In addition, staff who intervenes on this competence for the Region cannot ignore what we were doing in the Channel, they were already in charge of transport for the Department, including awareness. ”

In January 2014, the departmental council of La Manche had made it mandatory to wear the yellow vest for all schoolchildren and users of a school bus or a regular line of the department.

Until the fall of 2017, he funded and handed yellow vests to all students returning to sixth grade.

The Region argues on the time to harmonize practices between the five departments, deplores the elected. But is there not rather a will not continue this action deployed by the Department of the Channel since the others did not? I do not see where the complexity of the thing is; it worked well. ”

We see the child at 150 m, against 30 m if he does not have a vest.

The elected representative wishes to recall:

A person wearing a yellow vest with the reflective tape is seen 150 meters against 30, for those who do not wear it! ”

For this school year, the departmental council of La Manche suddenly made the choice to take again this load and for a budget of € 12,500, will distribute about 6,000 vests after the holidays of All Saints to middle school students in 6th in the 73 establishments of the Channel.

Contacted on the subject, the Regional Council of Normandy did not respond to our call.

Wearing reflections can save a life

On October 2, the “Be Visible” social campaign initiated by the Ministry of Transport and Communication took off in Lithuania.

Rojas Marsalis, the head of the department, initiated a nationwide campaign near the Lithuanian Post Office building in the town of Vievis, where as part of the month-long campaign, local residents will be distributed to 20,000 reflections – an indispensable attribute of pedestrians of road users and cyclists. Thanks to reflective materials on an unlit road, the driver will notice the pedestrian even from a distance of up to 200 meters.

The goal of the “Be Visible” social campaign is to encourage residents to take care of their safety on the road when it is dark. On 5-31 October, intensified inspections will take place on national roads, during which road police officers will check if pedestrians and cyclists are wearing reflections.

“In the period when the dark part of the day is a major part of our lives, the number of road accidents among pedestrians increases significantly. Almost always the victim has no reflection. The Lithuanian Road Administration, in order to persuade the public to pay attention to the increased risk, calls for children and adults not to forget about reflections. It is not recommended to have flares in the dark of the day, but it is necessary. It is very important that both the youngest and their parents remind them of this duty. “said Vitiates Grays, head of the Lithuanian traffic police service.

The officer is reminded that all road users who do not comply with traffic regulations and do not have flares in the dark are punished with fines ranging from 20 to 40 Euros. In this year 81 people were punished.

“Pedestrian safety is a serious problem. In 2017, 192 people died on the roads of Lithuania. 68 of them are pedestrians, who usually have no reflections “- said Vitiates Grays.

Especially in autumn and winter, pedestrians are obliged to take care of their own visibility.

Police remind that every pedestrian who moves along the road after dusk should have a reflective element placed in a visible way for drivers. People who do not comply with the regulations endanger their lives. Pedestrian dressed in a dark outfit is seen by the driver of the vehicle at a distance of about 20 meters. Reflective elements increase the visibility to a distance of 150 meters, and the vest up to 200 m. The lower the reflector is placed, the better the car’s headlamps will illuminate it and the driver can see the pedestrian earlier. The optimum height at which the user should wear a reflector is the height of the headlamps falling on it.

Make sure that the reflective accessories that you wear are not covered, such as a scarf, bag or backpack.

Going on the left side of the road (in the opposite direction to the movement of vehicles), it is best to wear reflections on the right hand or leg (from the direction of vehicle movement). When we move in the column, we should go to the right side and wear a reflection on the left hand or leg (from the direction of vehicle movement).

When buying reflective vests, make sure that the product meets the quality standards. The most important thing is that it should be marked with the CE symbol and comply with the European Union’s security standards. Depending on the quality of the product, the reflection can perfectly fulfill its role for several years. However, every autumn you should consider whether it still provides maximum protection. You can do this by illuminating the flashlight at eye level with old and new reflections from a distance of 4 meters. If the old reflective tape reflects less light than the new one, it’s time to change it.

They organized a Reflective Safety Day

Education in the field of safety of unprotected road users is a very important element in raising children and adolescents as well as adults. Therefore, the Primary School located on the busy provincial road for many years, together with the local government and many institutions, undertakes effective activities in this area, the effect of which is even the creation and functioning of one of the most modern communication towns in Poland.

It is here that the finals of the Nationwide Safety Tournament in Road Traffic take place. Next to the town there is a bike path under EUROVELO4.

For several years now, students of the school have undertaken numerous activities among the local community for safety, including the use of reflective materials by both pedestrians and cyclists.

Every year, the school takes part in the competition titled “Reflective School” trying to undertake innovative activities encouraging to increase the safety of unprotected road users.

One of the elements of organized “Reflective Safety Day” was the Picnic in the Communications Town called “Wear reflective clothing, shine with example” and “Reflective March” through the streets with banners that encourage residents to use reflective vests.

The police are appealing to wear reflective vests

The safety of pedestrians on the road, especially outside built-up areas, depends on their good visibility.

For many years, policemen have reminded us of the importance of the role of reflective materials in increasing the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists. Good visibility is one of the most important safety factors in road traffic.

The principle of “seeing and being seen” should lead us to an adult pedestrian, but we should also talk about it to our children. The police during all safety meetings remind us how important it is to wear reflective vests. Currently, many clothing, schoolbags, backpacks and shoes for children already have pre-stitched reflective fabrics sewn in.

Reminder:

  1. During poor visibility, when the pedestrian is wearing gray-black clothes and does not have reflective elements on the outer garment, the driver notices it with a long delay.

  1. Remember that in the dark the pedestrian can see the headlights of the car even from a distance of a few kilometers, but the driver will notice it only when he notices the silhouette of a man within the range of the car’s lights.

  1. In the dark, without reflective elements, we are visible in the passing light at a distance of only 20-30 meters. If the driver is driving at 90km / h, he will travel to 25 meters of road in 1 second and there is no chance of any reaction when he notices a pedestrian in his path.

  1. However, if the pedestrian is equipped with a reflective element reflecting the light of the car, the driver will notice it already from a distance of 130 -150 meters, which are about 5-10 times faster! This can save a living life.

  1. The widespread use of reflective elements in various forms – hangers, bands, vests, bright umbrellas etc. – will make the pedestrian’s chance of avoiding the setback in poor visibility conditions even if it makes a mistake, eg it will move the wrong side of the road .

  1. Correctly worn reflectors should be placed in such a place that they are in the field of car light and are noticeable for drivers approaching from both directions (from the back and the front).

Warning:

Traffic law stipulates that a person moving along the road, after dusk, outside the built-up area, is obliged to use reflective vests in a manner visible to other road users.

You do not need to convince anyone to write it down, but you should wear “reflections”, even if the regulations do not require it, in other words, preferably during the whole autumn, winter and early spring, both during the day and after dark. Not only outside the built-up area, but everywhere we move. This custom should apply to all pedestrians regardless of age and applicable law.

An automotive picnic under the sign of safety

Not only examining candidates for drivers, but also spreading knowledge about road safety is a key task for the Pomeranian Road Traffic Center. On Sunday, September 23, PORD organized a large family picnic in Gdansk, whose main goal was education in the field of road visibility. The use of reflectors and reflective vests was promoted, especially among children and adolescents, which make it easier for the driver to see pedestrians and cyclists on the road. The event was attended by numerous representatives from the automotive industry of the Tri-City, and the event’s star was the Golden Life band’s afternoon concert.

Wearing reflective clothing on the body, even 4 time reduces the risk of deduction – the organizers informed. A seemingly small, inconspicuous element reflecting light, turns out to be of great importance to safety.

We remind and sensitize all road users to pay close attention to their visibility on the road – emphasizes Roman Nowak, Director of the Pomeranian Traffic Center. We are already autumn, the days are getting shorter, the darkness falls earlier. To this rainfall, fog and all other weather phenomena that limit visibility. Often we do not even know that we are simply invisible to the driver of a moving car. It carries a huge risk of losing health or even life – warns Roman Nowak.

The policemen, city guards, as well as representatives of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, also informed about these dangers. The latter knows best how important the visibility of the Road Service employees is and how to signal their presence on the road, driving drivers.

Dealers of new cars, automotive companies and people associated with this industry also joined the campaign.

Each visitor of the “Visible = safe” event could count on a gift associated with it – participants were given flares, vests and backpacks in bright colors and reflective materials that increase the visibility of people on the road.

Visitors could count on many attractions that would make this education more attractive, prepared by the organizers. In addition to the exhibition of several classic cars, the exhibition of new cars – among them several novelties, including The new Ford Focus, Mercedes A-Class and Kia Kombi, were also shown motorcycle stunt demonstrations and road rescue performed by the Fire Brigade.

The Pomeranian Traffic Center announces that such events, promoting road safety, will fit permanently into the calendar of Tri-City automotive events.

Policemen promote the “Reflective School” competition

On Tuesday, August 28 this year. In Krakow a conference of school head and educational institutions of the Małopolskie voivodeship was held, organized by the Board of Education in Krakow.

The meeting was attended by a policewoman from the Traffic Department of the Polish Military Contingent in Krakow, who in her speech encouraged the current directors of primary schools to take part in the ninth edition of the Małopolskie Competition “Reflective School”.

The “Reflective School” Contest for the primary schools from the whole voivodeship was initiated by the Road Traffic Department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Krakow in 2010. Its aim is to increase the activity of directors of primary schools, local self-government authorities and parents in providing students with reflective vests. It gives the opportunity to show that their school not only teaches, but also cares about the safety of its students, especially on the way to and from school. In addition, the aim of the campaign is to draw the attention of educators, parents and guardians of the need to control the statutory obligation to use reflective materials and to promote all initiatives that limit the risks in road traffic.

This year’s campaign is being carried out in Małopolskie for the ninth time. Summing up the eight previous editions, we can say that they were very popular. In total, the competition was attended by over 2,500 primary schools from Lesser Poland, nearly 500,000. Students were equipped with reflective elements and reflective clothing. Over 30,000 appeared publications in the media promoting the use of reflective elements.

In addition, almost 3000 art competitions and knowledge about road safety were carried out. The “Reflective School” competition is run at the beginning of the new school year. Primary schools are taking care of students’ safety – equip them with reflective elements, making sure that they use them on the everyday road to and from school, ensure proper marking of school areas, organize educational campaigns promoting road safety, including parents.

The “Reflective School” Małopolskie Competition as an innovative approach of the Police to the education of students, translated into improved safety on the road for the youngest road users. From 2009, ie before the start of the competition to 2017, among children under the age of 14, the number of road accident victims decreased by 34%.

The tips for a safe “back to school”

The emergency service 112 of Andalusia has published a series of tips focused on self-protection and respect for road safety rules to avoid, as far as possible, incidents in the “back to school”. Tomorrow, Monday, September 10, classes begin in the province of Jaen and will return to be habitual the journeys by car, bus or walking from the homes of schoolchildren to the educational centers. In the case of any emergency, you must call 112.

If you go by car

If the journey is made by car, it is necessary to avoid parking in double rows and in non-authorized places such as garage doors as they can cause dangerous situations for other drivers and pedestrians. If we do not park well, we can block several lanes and even increase the risk for the minors since, to get to the car they will have to avoid badly parked cars. Also, due to their height, they can suffer an accident with a car that is maneuvering and not aware of their presence.

It is necessary to take child restraint chairs approved in the rear seats to transport children. They must be appropriate to the child’s age and weight. Although the trip to school is short, they always have to go in their special seat with the seatbelt. If the child is less than 1.35, he will always have to go back and can only go forward if he is over 18 or over 135 centimeters tall. In addition, it will be the person who drives the person in charge of placing the child correctly in his chair, without the backpack and fastening the belt. It is recommended not to go back when there are children in the vicinity and who are not on the other side of the road as they would be forced to cross the road.

If you go by bus

If you go by bus, you have to exercise caution when getting on or off the bus since it is the time of greatest risk with what you have to teach the child to go up and down in an orderly manner. The bus must carry, back and forth, the “School Transportation” signs and, if there is a companion for the students, you must wear a reflective vest with reflective tapes and get off the bus stops as well as keep an eye on the students.

The helmet and reflective clothing, for the bike and the motorbike

If you go by bike, you must wear a helmet, drive along the road and not on the sidewalk or on the bike lanes. Children have to wear reflective garments. It is also necessary to signal the maneuvers and be aware of the rest of the users circulating with caution. It is also recommended to make the tour in advance to warn the minor of the most dangerous points.

On the other hand, children under seven cannot travel by motorcycle and when that age is exceeded, they must go with parents, guardians or an authorized adult. They always have to go with an approved helmet to their size.

Tips for pedestrians

If you are walking, an adult must teach the child the basic rules of road safety education: cross the pedestrian crossings or with a green light, look at both sides of the street (first left, then right and last, again, left) to check that no car is coming. In the event that there is no sidewalk, you should walk along the edge of the road and, if possible, use elements that allow the child to be seen quickly as, for example, reflective vests.

Schoolchildren should walk, not running, jumping or playing near the roadway to avoid accidents with what they most likely will be on the side of the shoulder closest to the wall, away from curbs and with attention to the exits and entrances of parking and garages. In addition, it is recommended not to walk between parked cars to avoid collisions.

At the beginning of the school year

On Tuesday, September 11th, the new school year begins. The students will head back to the schoolhouses in droves. But after only a few weeks, the little ones will have to master the way to school on their own. In order to exclude the risk of accidents on the way to school as completely as possible, the police inspection of Walsenburg appeals to the rationality of road users.

“Send your child on the way in time!” is a police advice. Because the freshmen have to be able to manage their way to school in peace, without hectic rush and panic. The possibility that the first graders are distracted on their way to school should be taken into account.

The law enforcement officers know from Experienced: “Haste in traffic can be deadly!” And they advise all schoolchildren, not just the new schoolchildren, to dress reflective vests so that they are well seen even in bad weather by other road users. In doing so, parents should make sure that hoods do not restrict the child’s field of vision and do not lead to tunnel vision.

At the beginning of school, the first years of the traffic guard receive a reflective garment in a signal color, a high visibility vest, a harness, a cap or similar. The police ask the parents: “Insist that your child also puts on the reflective clothing on the way to school. The basic rules for the safe way to school are: “See and be seen!”

In principle, it is also to be welcomed from the point of view of the police if the children drive to school by bicycle and are not driven by their parents every day by car. The way to school by bike is from the point of view of the police but especially dangerous because the children would have to focus on driving. Therefore, parents should let their child go to school alone with the bike, if it has successfully passed the bicycle test in the fourth grade, advise the law enforcement officers. In addition, parents should make sure that the bike is safe and secure. Even trifles, such as a missing reflector, could already be fatal to children on the road if they are overlooked in the dark.

The nationwide ADAC warning vests campaign

For a good cause, the Minister of Transport immediately went to the ground: Bernd Buchholz perched on Monday morning in the auditorium of the Claus School to talk on equal terms with first graders on the subject of safety in traffic. It was the start of the nationwide ADAC warning vests campaign.

“I’m here today so you can safely get to school in the morning,” the visitor explained to about 75 girls and boys. Not only do they belong to the smallest road users: because children have a smaller field of view and a poor locating ability. They cannot perceive dangerous situations as well as older ones. Besides, they do not react so fast.

Therefore, it is all the more important that the other road users recognize the offspring in time. So that the first graders with reflective tapes can be seen more quickly in the dark, the ADAC Foundation launched the West Action in 2010. The motto: “100 meters ahead, who can decide.”

Sometimes the advantage of the all-round reflective vest is even greater, the ADAC calculates: in dark clothes, children in the dark can only be recognized from a distance of about 25 meters – wearing reflective clothing – after all, it’s already 40 meters. With the reflective safety vest, it even reaches 140 meters. Due to the eye-catching hood and the long cut the donated luminous clothing also protrudes from the back beyond the satchel.

“You promise me that you always put them on,” Minister Buchholz admonished his young listeners. Over the next few days, more than 22,000 reflective vests will be distributed in Schleswig-Holstein.
