No light, no bell, loud music in the ears – Before the Dahlewitzer Herbert Tschäpe high school police checked on Tuesday the bicycles of the students. Many of the wheels were not safe.

 

Tuesday began with a – not always pleasant – surprise for the students of the Herbert Tschäpe secondary school. When they entered the school grounds, the police were already waiting, especially for the cyclists. The Revierpolizisten Manfred Ewert and Uwe Depner checked whether lights, reflectors, and bell are available and work well.

 

Support was provided by the security community Blankenfelde-Mahlow and the prevention team of the police department West. Chief Inspector Ute Streckert and High Commissioner Axel Schugardt distributed reflectors, safety vests, reflective bags made of reflective fabrics, and informational materials to show what a safe bike is all about.

 

Police call out “days of visibility”

Throughout Brandenburg, the police have called the “days of visibility”. Until Thursday, especially cyclists are informed about the risks of the dark season. “People with dark clothes only recognize a car driver from a distance of around 25 meters,” explains Axel Schugardt. Girls were more insightful

Some students, especially girls, found the action good, the boys were less insightful. Some dropped their bikes on the way. Safety vests in Europe: holiday countries in the overview

In Germany, motorists are required from July to have at least one safety vest in the car. Safety vest best in the glove box

Italy: Anyone who is outside closed villages on the carriageway without a vest risks a warning fee of at least 41 euros. However, under Italian law, this only affects the driver or the person setting up the warning triangle. Motorcyclists are excluded. In the case of controls, however, no vest must be presented. “In Italy, only the duty to wear,” says Nissen.

 

Croatia: Motorists and motorcyclists must have a vest outside closed villages and cover in case of breakdowns. Violations are not punished in Croatia.

 

Austria: Here is a safety vest for the driver mandatory in the luggage. In poor visibility, in confusing areas or in the dark, the vests with reflective tapes must be covered even in case of breakdowns on the highway. “Austria is the only country where our members report enforced fines,” says Nissen. The penalty is between 14 and 36 euros.

 

Portugal: Anyone who does not carry a safety vest as a car or motorcyclist risks a fine of 60 to 300 euros. Who in an emergency on the road does not carry, even 120 to 600 euros. This is true only for vehicles registered in Portugal, but also includes rental cars for tourists.

 

Spain: Reflective vests have to carry drivers of cars, buses, and trucks, but moped and motorcyclists do not. If you do not wear a vest, you risk a fine of up to 100 euros – if you pay the penalty immediately, the Spanish police will release half the amount.

 

Making children more visible in the dark season through safety vests

Especially in the dark season, it is advisable to equip children in traffic with safety vests. So they are perceived by other road users much more likely.

Safety vests made of breathable and lightweight material. They are easy to pull over the normal jacket and do not hinder. It is best if they can be closed with a Velcro fastener, so the vest is quickly put on, fastened and also stripped off again. Color and reflectors make the difference with safety vests

If the children have to leave the house and go to school in the morning, it is still dark outside in autumn, winter and early spring. Whether they are on foot or by bicycle, they are not easy to spot for motorists, and in the morning rush hour traffic on the streets is still a little more dangerous than usual. Buy reflective vests with reflectors for your kids, they’re in the light the headlights are easy to see from far away, and drivers drive much slower and more cautiously.

Many road users in Germany must expect a fine of 15 euros from 1 July, if they have no safety vest in their vehicle. As reported by the “Saarbrücker Zeitung”, the Federal Ministry of Transport, led by Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), has fixed the amount of the fine in a new regulation.

If you want to clean your headlights thoroughly, you can clean the reflectors inside. Over time, however, the reflective elements may “go blind”. Then, depending on the extent, an exchange should be considered. The same applies to the headlight glass.

 

For example, if it is very cloudy or milky due to its age, even thorough cleaning inside and out does not provide much better light. Depending on the make in such cases, the purchase of new headlamps can be cheaper.

 

Change light bulbs

While the replacement of a complete headlight usually requires a visit to the workshop, the change of a light bulb can often be done in a few simple steps. Car models where the average consumer has to change the lamp in the workshop are fortunately the exception.

 

Therefore, it is worthwhile to change the bulbs in many cases. If you would like to use a more powerful bulb than before, you should first check out the manufacturer or the owner’s manual of which vehicle is approved for the respective vehicle type.

 

By changing the bulbs you can often increase the light output of the headlamps compared to the old lamps for little money often. About 10 to 20 euros cost brighter bulbs from major manufacturers. The Russian government has supplemented the road traffic regulations with a paragraph that obliges drivers to stop wearing a reflective jacket or reflective vest when the vehicle is forced to stop outside settlements.

According to preliminary estimates, additional elements can cause a rise in the price of goods by 10-15%. “But the question concerns the safety of Russians, this is the responsibility of the state. The state is obliged to protect the lives and health of citizens not only by increasing fines for violating traffic rules or introducing new punitive measures against offenders but also by regulating the activities of industrialists in the interests of people’s safety”.
