The BMW Street AIR system is a combination of a jacket and a safety vest with an integrated airbag system for a marked increase in the passive safety of motorcyclists. The high-tech system protects (along with the usual protection elements of the coat), chest, shoulders, legs and back key. The system also reduces the risk that the helmet comes in contact with a clavicle. The system can’t connect to the vehicle to be used on any motorcycle or scooter (both the rider and the pillion passenger) and consists of two parts:
– Vest Street AIR met airbag
– BMW Jack Street AIR Dry – other coats are in preparation for 2017, including the Jack Street Guard AIR.
BMW Street Air system is from now on sale at the BMW Motorrad dealers for € 1,600. With Street AIR system brings BMW Motorrad worldwide (except in the United States) an airbag system on the market for use on public roads, where previously the API system (Active Protection Inflatable) with the suit DoubleR Race AIR exclusively for the circuit and only offered in Europe.
The Street AIR system is intelligent, efficient, fast, autonomous, reliable, and ergonomic and Dekra checked. Zippers on the sides and press studs in the neck and under the arms are connecting the jacket to the vest. Worn under a jacket matching BMW is the BMW Street AIR system absolutely watertight and there is no connection to the motorcycle so that the system can be used on any brand and type of motorcycle.
BMW Street AIR system comprises electronics (hardware activation algorithm and software) and a compressed air system (gas generator and airbag with eleven liters volume). All components, including the lithium-ion battery are installed in the back of the vest in a rugged and waterproof housing. This is also the main, that the vest is activated. When the wearer then the zipper (with sensor) closes to the front of the jacket, the system is automatically activated. BMW Street AIR system is available which is a perfect fit and wearing comfort guaranteed for all builds and it can be hardly noticeable worn thanks to the low weight of the reflective vest (approximately two kilos) in various sizes.
Three sensors on the left and right shoulder and back monitor the driving situation. The special activation algorithm detects an accident and the system can start in 30 to 60 milliseconds in which the airbag inflates in 25 milliseconds. Extreme reliability is guaranteed through intensive testing procedures, in the form of various crash tests and simulations.
The lithium-ion battery (fully charged and activated system) up to 25 hours, and charging takes place via a micro-USB connector to the body with an adapter (230 V, 50 Hz) that comes standard with the system. The charging time is approximately six hours on a fully discharged battery. An LED on the left sleeve of the jacket shows the status of the BMW Street AIR system – including the operation and the charge status of the battery.
When protects the BMW Street AIR system?
BMW Street AIR system is designed for transport and it also allows limited off-road usage. The system recognizes critical situations and intervenes:
The system activates itself only when necessary and not in crashes at speeds below 20 km / h. The critical situation is continuously analyzed and if it develops gradually, the air bag later or even not activated fully.
Jack AIR Dry Street.
Jack Street AIR Dry is a waterproof, suitable for touring endure jacket with API preparation (Active Protection Inflatable) which combines it with the Vest Street AIR. The jacket is wind and waterproof with a breathable, water-repellent coating. On chest and back are unique, long ventilation zippers and material reinforcements are arranged on in vulnerable places. Furthermore, the jacket features width adjustment at waist and sleeve hem, two waterproof pockets with flaps, two chest pockets, one sleeve pocket on the left and one bag down the back. On the chest, sleeves and back is reflective material.
Jack Street AIR Dry is available in two different colors (black and gray) and various sizes: 38-48 for women and 48-60 for men. Other jackets are in preparation for 2017, including the Jack Street Guard AIR.
